How Often and When Should You See an Audiologist?

As your providers of hearing aids and hearing aid tests in Southfield, Allen Park, and the greater Detroit area, we at Platinum Hearing Aids have made it our goal to provide comprehensive audiology care for all of our patients. Unfortunately, many people don’t take advantage of all of the services that we can provide. While most wouldn’t think of missing a checkup at the doctor or a dentist, your ears are often forgotten. Don’t make this mistake; remember to take the time to visit your local audiologist for a checkup!

When Should You Visit a Hearing Specialist?

We recommend visiting your audiologist once every year. After all, people normally visit the dentist once every six months to get their teeth checked. They normally visit their eye doctor once every year or once every two years to get their eyes checked. It should be no different for your ears as they’re every bit as important to you as your teeth and eyes. When you go to a hearing specialist for a checkup, you’ll be dealing with a professional that has both the equipment and the expertise needed to identify any nuanced ranges of hearing loss.

Other Reasons for Visiting an Audiologist

Some other reasons why we’d recommend that you visit your Southfield and Allen Park hearing center include the following:

  • Excessive Wax – While producing earwax is beneficial because it’s self-cleaning, it protects the ear, and it moisturizes the ear canal. You can sometimes produce an excessive amount of it. If your earwax is impacted and you’re having a hard time removing it, your audiologist will be able to help without damaging your inner ear. Whatever you do, do not attempt to remove ear wax with a cotton swab.
  • Tinnitus – This is when you hear ‘ringing’ in your ears. However, the noise being made can also be described as buzzing, whistling, and screeching among other things. Tinnitus is usually connected to hearing loss, making it doubly important to visit the audiologist if you notice it.
  • Hearing Loss – If you notice that you’ve been gradually losing your hearing (for example, you’ve been having a harder time hearing high-pitched sounds, you have an inability to hear in a crowd, or you have to turn the television up louder), you should visit a hearing center for a hearing aid test. Also, if you notice that you have a sudden hearing loss (due to a loud noise, trauma, or something similar), you should visit our hearing center immediately.

The Effect of Cold Weather on Hearing Aids

If you wear a hearing aid or you’re considering one, you may be disappointed to hear that the cold weather can affect them. It’s not necessarily that the cold temperature itself that will damage it, but the condensation that occurs due to changes in temperature that can set into a hearing aid and harm it. It doesn’t even need to be snowing or raining for this to occur because moisture is present when there are extreme temperature changes. For example, you may be walking around outside in the freezing cold weather, but when you get back indoors, it could be 50-to-60 degrees warmer inside, which can form condensation on your hearing aids.

Signs That Your Hearing Aid May Have Been Damaged

Moisture can cause damage to your hearing aids by ruining the microphone and receiver and can also clog up the earmold tubing and sound. You’ll be able to notice that your aids have been damaged by spotting the following signs:

  • The sound will either fade out or it will come and go.
  • The hearing aid will cut out when there are loud noises.
  • Sounds are often unclear.
  • Static is commonly present when hearing anything.

Preventing Your Hearing Aids From Being Damaged

Moisture may be hard to avoid when it’s very cold out, but there are still some precautions that you can take to help keep your hearing aids in good working shape:

  • You may want to purchase a dehumidifier or a hearing aid drying kit. You can remove the batteries and keep your hearing aid inside it every night.
  • If it’s raining, use an umbrella. Also, make sure that your ears are covered when it’s snowing out.
  • If your hearing aid gets wet at all, take the battery out immediately.
  • You can purchase sweatbands or spandex covers to help keep them free of moisture.
